Being the urban capital of a nomadic nation Ulan Bator with the population of over 1 million people is the largest city of Mongolia. It is a home for almost 40% of Mongolian population. Initially founded in 1639 as a Buddhist monastic center it grew up into a major regional trading and manufacturing center. Here, old Buddhist monasteries rest right next to the monolithic architecture of the Soviet era, and the modern residential districts are a mixture of tall condos from concrete and glass with the immense number of nomad gers where people live the way their ancestors did for many centuries. Stretching along the valley of the Tuul River and embraced by four sacred mountains Ulan Bator serves the main gateway to its nation’s open spaces found beyond the peaks.
