Ice-Yachting Championship will be Held at Lake Baikal in 2012

Lake Baikal Ice-Yachting ChampionshipThe ice-yachting championship will be held in April 2012 on Lake Baikal ice. The decision to host a race at Lake Baikal was made by Russian Association of International DN Iceboats.

International DN iceboat weights 60 kilograms (132 pounds) and can reach speeds of 150 km/h (93 mph). The iceboat can go five times faster than the wind that makes it move. Design of International DN iceboat was developed in 1937 by the Detroit News. Iceboat is similar in functional design to a sail boat but fitted with three skates which are intended to run over ice instead of water.

Ice-yachting championship will be held at Lake Baikal for the second time. Last time it was organized at Baikal in April 2011. This was Asia Ice-Yachting Cup Stage which took place at village Kurma located at the Small Sea strait of Lake Baikal. 21 iceboaters who came from Moscow, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Vladivostok, Bratsk, and also one British competed then. The winner became Andrey Astashev from Moscow.
