Agency for Tourism at Irkutsk Regional Government reports that in 2009 the number of Russian tourists arrived at Baikal Lake has remained at almost the same level in comparison with 2008. While international tourist arrivals registered in Irkutsk and Baikal hotels plunged down 30% in 2009. This was due to the overall downturn in the world’s travel industry. However, experts believe that the constant rise of hotel rates and airfares observed during recent years in Russia also contributed greatly to this decline.

As a whole, 664 thousand visitors arrived Irkutsk and Baikal lake with recreational and tourist purposes in 2009. The number of foreign visitors accounted for 45 thousands. In the first quarter of 2010, 127 thousand tourists came to Irkutsk which is somewhat less than during the same period of 2009. However, authorities indicated that only summer season statistics will allow saying if these figures tend to rise or fall on yearly basis.

As usual, Germany ranks first among the other countries by the number of tourists at Baikal. France, Poland, Japan and Great Britain follow that list.
