Olkhon Island: Sand Beach at Sarayskiy Bay

There are not too many places at Lake Baikal that can boast of sandy beaches. The severe Siberian Sea is enframed by either unapproachable rocky capes or river pebble shores. This in fact makes Olkhon Island the unique place. There are several sunny beaches with fine sand, and no wonder people enjoy here basking in the sun. Unlike overcrowded beaches at Sochi which is the famous Russia’s Black Sea resort, here at Lake Baikal you will easily find a spot to take a tan and if weather permits – have a swim in cool and perfectly pure waters of Baikal lake.

The best place to do this is the sandy beach at Saraysky bay of Olkhon Island. One of the advantages of the place is that the beach is located within the walking distance (in about 1.5 km) from Khuzhir the biggest and practically the only settlement of the island. The beach lying northwards from one of the local attractions - Burkhan Cape stretches for 3 km and offers fantastic views of the Primorsky Mountains across the blue expense of the Small Sea strait that separates the island from the mainland. The other side of the sandy beach is fringed by a pine forest which serves as a very nice place for hiking and jogging.
